this and that

Some recent posts/articles that I enjoyed:

Bill Kauffman uses a review of a rather unsatisfying book to talk about the slow and agonizing death of rural America.

Think the recession’s over?  Not by a long shot.

Lastly, John Mark Hicks on Alexander Campbell’s continuing fascination with demonology.  A recent post deals with an address delivered by Campbell on a trip to Nashville in 1841.

  1. Interesting eulogy on rural life in America. It’s premature and overwrought, IMO. We’re likely to see a resurgence of rural living once hyperinflation hits (be that 2010, 2011, 2012, or whatever).

Of course, the shift and the accompanying cultural changes have had a tremendous impact on (historically rural in the US) churches of Christ as well.

  2. Not to sound morbid, but it’ll have to happen soon. Otherwise, there may not be any land left at the rate we’re putting up cheaply built subdivisions and the Wal-marts to supply them with.

  3. I have a strong intuition that the days of widespread building of new housing and retail are over. You can’t double the money supply overnight without horrible consequences. Just a matter of when they catch up to us.
